Fall River's Number One Problem

I don't know why I get shocked or stunned anymore with news like this. The phone rang at a strange hour of the night, and I knew it couldn't be good. It wasn't. Another young man was gone among the many who have been lost in Fall River's version of the war on drugs. Another young life cut way too short. But this one was a little different. Every life is valued unquestionably, but this was a young man whom I had coached and known, a young man who had potential and didn't deserve the drastic fate he encountered. There are no fancy funeral processions, no full honors for the victims of the war on drugs right here in our city - a drug war that has taken way too many lives and has touched each and every family through the SouthCoast. It's a war that we are losing on a daily basis despite the constant infusion of funds to our law enforcement and penal facilities to fight this.

The latest victim was 27 years old. In fact, I know most of his friends - not friends from the life that ultimately claimed him, friends from the life that I knew: Boys & Girls Club friends, Columbus Park friends, real, good friends. They were a special group. They liked sports, music, and hanging out with their friends, friends with ties that bind. Friends like Jose, Peter, and Billy. The friends that I saw with their eyes swollen with tears, shaking their head shocked that such a cruel fate could happen to one of their own.

All the politicians and all the pundits can step on their soap box and tell you all about Fall River, talking about things that Fall River needs: a commuter rail, a casino, the perpetual carrot for decades now. While it's true that Fall River needs all of these things, the biggest thing it needs to realize is that the number one problem is the heroin, oxycontin, opiate epidemic that has had Fall River in a death grip for decades. Make no mistake about it, folks. Take a look around you, and you will see its effects all over the SouthCoast. Shattered dreams, fractured families, and many lives lost all around us. Many like the 27-year-old that I had once known, I had once coached, and who is the subject of this blog post.

I remember distinctly talking to his friends about how nice his mother was and how well she treated everyone in the neighborhood. I remember them talking about his personality and his love and loyalty to his friends from his old neighborhood. I also watched them with sunken eyes and deflated shoulders talk about the destruction that the opiate epidemic has left on their childhood group of friends.
One of them said to me, "Who the fuck would have thought this when we were all at the Boys Club and Columbus Park when we were 12 years old?" I shook my head and said, "I know. Believe it or not, this one shocked and surprised me." But the reality is that no one should be shocked or surprised, especially me. I've seen it too many times.

This is the first installment in a series running all week looking at Fall River's crippling opiate/heroin epidemic. We have made a commitment at HurricaneRadio.net to bring you news and information in a much more direct, street-level way as only new media outlets can provide. This is the first of many, taking a hard, close look at the issues affecting all of us.

Coming next, Hurricane takes a walk, and you won't believe what he finds.

  6. I couldn't agree more. This seems to be the Elephant in the room subject around here. I have never heard of ANY politician even taking a swing at it. Glad to hear you speak out on the topic. I grew up my whole life not knowing my father due to his addiction to Heroin. Later in life witnessed a few close friends and countless others fall to a new generation Heroin ..Oxycontin no longer do you necessarily need a drug dealer the government decided to take its cut on the business you can go strait to your local doctor. Why are these things even made? With all the regulation this government has in place why nothing to protect the best interest of it's people?

  7. Nice to see that you are on the right track, Michael. It has been a long time coming.

  8. Sooo... an admitted 'CEO' with drug issues is writing about a drug issue in the city but mentions only heroin, and not his own personal drugs of choice - coke, weed, perks... basically anything that's not H or oxy, drugs he ain't doing, allegedly. Fraud.

  9. That was a wonderful point you made Michael .. Anyone that has anything bad to say about it should kick rocks!

  12. We need jobs! Get these kids off the streets and most important we need parents to start spending more time with their children

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes I am so glad that you are talking about it. At 1 time I had six grown children, in this epidemic. Now I only have 5 left. So if one of your haters wants to step up and back up their hatefulness, I will tell them that NO ONE IS IMMUNE.!!! and it can and probaly is happening in thier own groups. Then we will here about it. And anyone who can lift themselves out of this is a hero to me.

  14. So many people want to post that this article-blog is right on track. Why? So you are telling me that Fall River, a city with high unemployment, a city on the south coast of liberal land massachusetts has drug issues??? Wow!!! Wait...whats next....are you going to tell me that if you bait a hook a fish might bite? As long as we are human, people will fight the battle against addiction in all its forms. Do people want answers? Yes Do we want our felllow citzens off drugs? Of course! My question is how do we impead or stop the this "epidemic???" Perhaps some suggestions Mike??????

  17. FallRiver PhilosopherAugust 29, 2010 at 5:26 PM

I knew him as well, sad story Mike. I'm from Fall River and have witnessed the epidemic you speak of, it's sad because he was a really smart kid and many of the victims that fall to the wrath of Heroin usually are. I graduated in the late 90's and many of my childhood and highschool friends have been addicted or currently are addicted to Heroin. Family members, friends, parents of friends, the list goes on and it's kept fairly secret usually reading "died of a sudden illness" when the overdose occurs in the obituaries. No Op-Ed stories at the Herald News, a quick conversation with someone from the old neighborhood ("have you heard about so and so", "ya too bad huh:)and then it's off to the next. I would suggest doing feature stories, about the people they use to be before the drugs took over.

I'm living in the Pacific Northwest now attending graduate school, this area of the country has a much different problem (meth) but it claims just as many of our loved ones. My question to you Mike is this, what do you think we should do about it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with philosopher...What should we do about it. For those of us who live in the city we know this is a problem....HELLO

  19. its about time someone talked about this issue seriously great great blog mike

  20. There is absolutely nothing u can do about this so called epidemic , people choose to get high , u can feel bad and try to help active users to only a certain extent. During my years getting high on heroin on and off with decent amounts of clean time I've learns that addiction is a disease , a very serious one but addiction comes at people all different ways , u can be addicted to drugs, gambling, cars , sex but what ever it is u choose to do the bottom line is u choose to do it and if u don't want to help your self to recover then there is nothing no one else can do to help so as long as people want to get high they are going to. No matter how many dealers the police take off the streets it will no matter , u could eliminate all the drug dealers in the city and a drug addict will go to the end of the earth to get off empty in the morning. This so called epidemic will never end it will go on for ever all u can do is encourage active users to get help but if they are not ready to recover then they will not ....bottom line

  21. That is absolutely right , I have been getting high since I was 16 yrs old , I'm not posting my name but mike knows me well . I was a very good athlete as a kid I played baseball all my life , was always on all star and traveling teams , I even played durfee basketball but the sad truth is heroin took all that away from me, I did my first jail bid at 18 and have been in and out , just recently got realesed last feb. And of course my addiction got ahold of me once again, but thanks to the courts and probation I was forced into detox a few months ago and have been clean for going on 90 days , I am a high school drop out and I just past the rob Roy test and start school this September and I am scheduled to take my G.E.D test also this month I am trying to turn my life around because enough is enough , I have a beautiful little boy that is my world and it's time to step it up and better my life but like the kid above me said people won't change or stop using drugs unless they want to , there is no way what so ever to stop the heroin epidemic in the city or any were else for that matter. But it's sad to say but maybe from all our friends dying from heroin over doses it will open some eyes and grow some balls and ask for help there are plenty of places around here that will help u get on the tight track and onto recovery ..............RIP ...N.B

  22. Horrible loss of a young man's future, my heart is broken over the loss this family must be feeling.
Mike should not only post this on his fb/blog but offer to help the family.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mike should also get on the right track.

    ReplyDelete
  24. First of all I am getting so tried of the usage of the childish term "haters" on this blog. I mean a selk proclaimed 40 year old "CEO" and his croonies who are suppsoed to be all of adult age using a juvenile term is laughable at very best. Grow the f*ck up already.

Second Mike can cast ZERO stones as he is STILL an alcoholic and drug abuser. I have seen it firsthand in the last month. So how can we take this seriously from someone preaching a gospel he doesn't live himself... Please now Mike.

Third I get so tired of the excuses of how hard drugs are and how hard they are to get off of. My wife of 15 years had her first child (my step son) right out of high school at he age of 18. Sh egraduated and became a mom. She was abused by her ex-husband who never knew (even til today) his son. He was a a drunk and drug addict. She worked two and three jobs at 18 with a newborn to take care of her child alone.

She got rid of that piece of shit and struggles on her own. NEVER once did she abuse drugs when they were even in her face (the ex-using). She did everything she had to and is an incredible wife and mother anyone would want in their lives.

We have two children of our own, a home, two cars and she makes very good money on nothing more than high school diploma.

So spare me with the excuses. THIS is a f*cking city of excuses. Hence why we have welfare cases everywhere, drug addicts, SSI cases, nasty scum ridden projects and apartment houses.

YOU choose the life you lead. So I feel pity for no one who chooses that path. Be a big f*cking boy or girl and own up to your destiny.

  25. Who uses the word Hater- Mike your 40 years old...Time to take off the Durfee Letterman jacket and put it away. Still trying to live off your past success 20 years away in high school. Big deal you won a state title. What have you done for the past 20 years ...Know that is funny ....hater.

    What a joke.

  26. What the fuck does this post have to do with haters or Hurricane playing basketball.I thought the blog was right on the money and i think this problem is so serious it needs to be talked about more.Nice work!!

    Good topic though.

  32. Mike,

As someone who grew up in a much worse part of Fall River then you did and who also worked their way through college I take offense to your essay.

You were given every opportunity and have been nothing but an embarrassment to the city.

Many of us go to work or school every day and do not have frequent run-ins with the law. If we do get in trouble we take the punishment and don't call our City Counselors or our father to get us out of a jam.

We don't beat our girlfriends, scare our co-workers or cower in hotel bathrooms with cocaine.

If you were a law abiding citizen I would applaud your essay. The truth is that you are the problem.

If people like you didn't take the easy way out there wouldn't be any drug dealers in Fall River.

There is this misconception that the people with different skin colors that live here have brought the drug problem into our cities.

The fact is it's people like you and your family that are crashing cars into poles while strug out on dope or doing blow in hotel bathrooms in Somerset.

Anyone can post on a blog and be self-righteous. It takes a person of strong moral character to lead by example.

I watched your video and you mention you're enjoying your house. I was under the impression you were a 39 year old man living in your dad's house. When did you purchase your own home?

  33. Mike Herren,

I would love to hear a comment on the above statement. Man up and reply to the comments above. If not, then you are just talk and type under Anonymous like you have been.

My money is you won't reply to any of the suggestions above.

  34. YOU TAKE AN AWFUL LOT OF TIME WORRYING ABOUT WHAT THE HURRICANE IS DOING.IF WE ARE TO BELIEVE THAT YOU REALLY DID GROW UP IN FALL RIVER THAN YOU SHOULD KNOW HOW NUCH MICHAEL HAS DONE FOR HIS COMMUNITY.HAVE YOU EVER CARRIED THE OLYMPIC TORCH FOR YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK?? HAVE YOU EVER MENTORED AT RISK YOUTH AND SEEN THEM THROUGH COLLEGE??HAVE YOU EVER RAISED 30,000 FOR HOLIDAY FUNDS FOR THE POOR?? HAVE YOU EVER BROUGHT ANY PRIDE OR JOBS TO YOUR CITY?? HAVE YOU EVER COACHED OR VOLUNTEERED?? HAVE YOU EVER STARTED ANY PROGRAMS FOR AT RISK YOUTH?? ETC...IVE KNOWN MICHAEL FOR A LONG TIME AND I KNOW WHAT KIND OF PERSON HE IS.I KNOW HOW MANY TIMES HES HELPED ME GET A JOB AND GOT MY COUSIN INTO DRUG REHAB.WHO CARES IF HE OWNS HIS OWN HOME?? WHEN DID HE EVER SAY PEOPLE OF COLOR BRING DRUGS INTO FR??I AM A PERSON OF COLOR(lol) AND I MET MICHAEL THROUGTH THE BLACKTOP LEAGUE WHERE HE WAS THE ONLY PERSON AROUND HELPING MY PEOPLE OF COLOR!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. wow. god bless the family that is hurting, please accept my prayer.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have done a lot of things for my community.

I also pay taxes, own property and live an hones, quiet life free from court cases, beating up women and threatening people.

If Michael really wanted to be a role model he would do the same.

Good role models are people that contribute to society. People who get up and go to work and do an honest day of work for a paycheck.

Good role models are the people who keep their yards clean and who pay their bills on time.

Good role models provide safe homes for their children and work so that they can provide food, clothing and shelter for their families.

Someone can "mentor" or "coach" and those are honorable things when the person doing them is doing them for the right reasons - and not to have something to show a judge they're doing to "get their life together".

    What has Michael ever done?

He was raised by a different set of rules and was never punished. His father and uncle kept him out of trouble for all of the crimes he committed and he continues to set a bad example for everyone.

Beating women, using drugs, being drunk off his ass in the local bars in the city and we put up with it.

    Why?

Because he could put a ball through a hoop at the high school level.

If Michael Herren really wanted to help the city he would move away.

If Michael Herren was a real man he would apologize for the awful, cowardly actions he has been accused of.

Real men don't plead "no contest". Real men don't cry when the police arrest them and call Linda Perreria and Joe Camara to get them out of a jam.

Real men raise their children and support them financially and real men who are 39 years old don't live with daddy.

Funny, one of Mike's catch phrases was, "You'll be crying for mommy and daddy when you have three hots and a cot" and that's exactly what this "real man" was doing after a couple hours in jail for the tough guy crime of beating up a young girl.

Really nice role model for our children and that's something his daughter would be proud of.

Anyone can write a blog - real men (and women) lead by example.

Oh, and if you want to cry about needles in the street maybe you should go talk to your brother about the dangers of crashing cars while strung out on junk.

Save the good, hard working people of Fall River the lecture.

We've had it and are fed up with the "junk" that Michael Herren has been pushing here for years.

Oh, and as far as being arrested and being a poor excuse for a man who behaves like a child - Mike will repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It is funny that Mike Herren comments in CAPS and in third person above. Everyone knows it was you.

Funny how you won't comment with a picture next to you but instead have to reply in caps under a fake story that only you would know the statements in the above repsonse.

I was right. You won't reply. What a Fake.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Michael,

You coached some teams, you raised some money and you've given nothing of substance back to the city that treated you better then everyone else.

You can brag about the $30,000 you raised for charity. Have you ever earned $30,000.00 for yourself?

Have you ever paid student loans?

Do you provide your daughter with a safe home, clothes, food and a stable father?

Have you ever held a job that you weren't given by a friend?

I would be more impressed by Michael Herren if he were flipping burgers at McDonalds and keeping his nose clean (pun intended).

You have probably volunteered more then most of us because people like us work 40+ hours a week to put food on the table.

I don't live at home in my daddy's house and I don't beat up women. I don't have any "open cases" and I have never been found hiding in a hotel bathroom with drugs.

What have you earned, other then a bad reputation?

You claim to love the city but you don't even own any property here.

You claim to be a man but you abuse women.

You claim to be upset about the drug problems here but you have been charged with drug cases.

I'm willing to wager that you don't even buy your own groceries.

You're a pathetic example of exactly what is wrong with Fall River.

You want to see the drug problem in Fall River?

    Look in the mirror

You want to see why our sons and daughters are living in poverty?

Look in the mirror, as you have no job and no earning power.

You want to see why young girls are getting preg and why there are no fathers?

    Look in the mirror.

You are the embodiment of everything that is wrong with this city.

Big deal, you coached some sports teams.

How about getting an honest job and staying clear of drugs, drink and the law?

I honestly hope that you're not crazy enough to honestly believe you are a good person who does good things.

You're narcissistic with a personality disorder, that's for sure. It's a shame you've been allowed to grow into the failure that you are today.
